Henry’s photograph

The Time Traveler's Wife

Henry’s photograph is an image of him dated June 1988 that Clare already owns when she meets him in 1991. Its existence surprises Henry and gives Gomez concrete evidence of a connection that precedes the couple’s first meeting in ordinary chronological time.

The Photograph and Its Date

When Gomez questions Henry about the photograph, he describes it as an outdoor picture in which Henry is smiling. Its date, written on the back, is June 1988. Gomez contrasts the pictured Henry with the man he had seen only a couple of weeks earlier: the photograph resembles Henry as he looks during their present conversation, rather than as he looked at that earlier dinner.

Clare’s Prior Knowledge

Henry does not know that Clare has the photograph. Learning that she possessed an image of him before their 1991 meeting catches him off guard; he asks what it looks like and then listens to Gomez’s description. The photograph thus records a fact about Clare’s knowledge that Henry himself lacks, while its date places that knowledge before their first encounter at the Newberry Library.

Narrative Significance

The image works as more than a likeness: its date and Clare’s possession of it expose the uneven distribution of knowledge created by Henry’s time travel. Gomez can use the photograph to press Henry with questions about his unexplained changes and conduct, and Henry recognizes that Gomez needs to learn the truth about him. In this way, the photograph becomes a material clue in a conversation that moves Henry toward disclosure, while also showing how an object from the past can make a future relationship legible before both people share the same chronology.
